The Missouri Birth and Death Records Database is an abstract of the birth, stillbirth, and death records recorded before 1909 and that are available on microfilm at the Missouri State Archives. (See Brief History of Vital Records in Missouri) The Bureau of Vital Records has certificates of Missouri births from 1910 to the present.

In order to provide Missouri citizens with immediate, free access to these records, the Archives began a three-and-a-half year project to index and digitize all of the death certificates for placement online. A complete index, searchable by name, county, month and year, was placed online in April 2006.

The application for copies of birth or death certificates can be downloaded from the Missouri Vital Records website. In 1883 Missouri passed a state law requiring the recording of births and deaths at the county level. Ten years later this law was inadvertently repealed. At any rate, compliance was poor.
